Bringing Edinburgh Communities Together

Multi-Media

Film is a very accessible way for students to learn about the world. All students love films, and we tailor workshops to their individual tastes, so they are learning in a comfortable environment. This workshop lets people see how films are constructed, from scriptwriting and art direction, through acting, use of the camera, to editing and even composing their own film score to make the film complete.

Facilitated by a qualified instructor with a background in film and multimedia, students can either work towards taking part in a community art exhibition, or producing a film for a public audience. For film projects, students work on animation, moving image, documentaries, script-writing and acting.

Who is it for?
Multimedia is for anyone who has an interest in film, and wants to create work they can be proud of. It is also for people who want to use their creativity, and analyse the craft of constructing a text.

A typical session
The workshop leader will begin the class with students in a circle, finding out how people are, and what ideas they can bring to the class. This is a social time to get the students interacting and sharing information freely. Students will warm up their voices and bodies using phrases and gestures that the characters we are going to film will make. We plan through films, with students taking on different technical roles each week and then film them together. Each week focuses on different technical techniques and we make short video projects scripted by the students. We also do music tasks, where we look at composing alternate music for films and look at composing music for our own films. We practice filming live performances, with students taking on technical roles and singing if they wish to. We also practice signing along to music, to increase student knowledge in this area.

What can they expect to learn in a 10 week term?
Language of film, information on how to read and make a film, film music, practice at signing anf singing, teamwork, concentration and creativity.
