Digital Photography
We live in an increasingly digitalised world, these days almost all photographs are taken digitally. The workshop is facilitated by a trained instructor and themes are chosen to reflect the interests of the student. The majority of study takes place outside of the classroom, however there are options indoors if the weather is unsuitable.
In addition to taking their own photos, students are taught how to pay attention to aesthetic qualities of patterns derived from colour, light verses dark, texture and subject. Students explore a range of photographic techniques, with consideration given to focus, panning, shutter speed and light and dark filtering. Students can choose to work on photographic editing, including image manipulation, cropping, layering and dividing frames.
Students will work on their own portfolio and have the opportunity to share their work with friends and family at a public exhibition and on our site.
Who is it for?
This workshop is for students who have an interest in images, photography or exploring new parts of their community.
A typical session
Students will be escorted to locations around Edinburgh such as a beach, forest, botanical gardens or castle. Each student will have the use of a digital camera to take photos with. Sometimes they may be asked to focus on taking photos of a particular colour or texture. On returning to Upward Mobility, there will be the opportunity to upload the images onto computers and students can put the pictures onto a CD, print some out, make a DVD with comments and a soundtrack or even put all the images into a book which can be ordered and printed! Students can make requests for places they would like to go to as photography outings.
What can they expect to learn in a 10 week term?
An understanding of camera operation, increased awareness of working within a team in the community and confidence in their photographer's eye.
