Creative Movement
This workshop is facilitated by a trained instructor. Exercises are designed to improve physical fitness, spatial awareness, coordination, balance and mental health. Each term, students are introduced to a variety of different styles of movement and dance, ranging from traditional line dancing to hip hop. Students develop a range of movements while having plenty of opportunity to invent their own. There is also the chance to perform in front of the camera or a live audience.
Who is it for?
As this workshop is a combination of relaxing dance, yoga, stretching and drama, it is for anyone who likes to move their body to music in a less strenuous way than clubbing!
A typical session
The workshop leader will begin the class with students in a circle, finding out how people are and what they have been up to since the last workshop. This is a social time which builds up team morale and gives students the opportunity to offload any stress and share any excitement. A long warm-up focuses on breathing, stretching and releasing any bodily tension. This will be followed by many gentle exercises. For example, students will be guided in a circle, jumping to the music in different directions and positions. Students will be taught to make different sounds, using their body as an instrument. Different students can choose to go into the centre of the circle and students will pat the individual to give them a great sense of relaxation. By using eye contact as a communication tool, students can move into different shapes and places by signalling with their eyes. The workshop will be finished with mirroring and finally a Conga Train!
What can they expect to learn in a 10 week term?
Focus, relaxation, co-ordination, dance moves and how to stretch. Students are taught to move their bodies in time to music and access their memory.
