Bringing Communities Together

Animation

Using state of the art editing suites, students create their own animation feature from ideas inspired by photographs, locations and characters. We offer training in stop-motion techniques using characters created from plasticine or drawn on paper.

Animation brings together lots of different aspects of Upward Mobility workshops, to give the student a well-grounded way to express their creative impulses.  Students can also build up a portfolio of their animation, with art examples and DVD examples of their work.  Animation is also a way that people can explore emotions and situations in relatable way to their tastes.

Who is it for?

Animation is for anyone interested in the process of animation, with a lot of patience to construct it.  People who are interested in art and filmmaking will love this course, as it brings in both.

A typical animation project:

Students can choose different ways they wish to use the animation class. They are not restricted to focussing on one both are available to be tried at any time.

Cell Animation:

Students will work with staff to create a story, and design any characters they wish to use.  They will then design each individual cell by drawing on paper, or on the computer.  Each cell will be coloured by hand or on the computer. These will be added onto up-to-date software to allow the student to edit it.  The student can then add voices, SFX and music to finish the animation off.  Each project will take approximately 10 weeks to complete.

Stop motion animation:

Students will work with staff to create a story and design any characters they wish to use.

Students will create models out of any material they wish; previous examples include clay and papier-mâché.  Students can either create a world where the stop motion figures interact with each other, or with human actors.  They will film each individual cell on a camera, and add this onto up-to-date software to allow the student to edit it.  The student can then add voices, SFX and music to finish the animation off.  Each project will take approximately 10 weeks to complete.

What can they expect to learn in a 10 week term?

Technical skills of art creation, camera design and editing, concentration, film language skills, and how to make an animation from start to finish.

Quotes
'Lights, camera……..ACTION!'

“I like the challenge of creating characters and the prospect of making future films. My favourite parts of the animation process are choosing colours, bringing characters to life, and the chance to create scenes in any location. Voicing characters is fun too because it’s just like acting and I can play at being someone else”. Colin (Age 19) Animation Student.
