Bringing Communities Together

Songwriting

Most of the students who come to Upward Mobility listen to music and some even know the words to their favourite songs off by heart. This workshop gives students the opportunity to be behind the scenes in seeing how songs come together and the opportunity for performance as the songs are delivered.

Who is it for?

Songwriting is for anyone who has an interest in music and wants to create songs and take part in performing them.

A typical session
The workshop leader will begin the class with students in a circle, finding out how people are and what they have been up to since the last workshop. This is a social time, which builds up team morale and gives students the opportunity to offload any stress and share any excitement. Students will warm up their voices and choose a musical instrument, such as a guitar, drum, bell or recorder. The workshop leader will go over songs that have been learnt in the previous week or two and students can sing along with their chosen instruments. With full student involvement a new theme for a song is created, along with the type of music and genre. Students then collaborate to write a song with the workshop leader and their support workers. When this process is finished the song is practiced and modified into a great finished product!

What can they expect to learn in a 10 week term?
Teamwork, concentration, language skills, how easy it is to write brilliant songs!
